When Elon Musk announced that one has to be prepared to die to step on Mars, a lot of people surely would have felt a bit uneasy with the idea. But don’t worry as there might just be a less dramatic alternate option out there in case you want to visit or live in space!
Scientists have unveiled a unique plan called “Asgardia”, which is planned to be a floating nation acting as a defender of the Earth mining meteorites and fending off space debris.

The nation will have room for 100,000 citizens and is supposed to be the first space nation in our history.
Dr Igor Ashurbeyli of the Aerospace International Research Center and now the chairman of UNESCO’s Science of Space Committee, announced this incredible prospect in Paris, saying Asgardia looks to“flourish free from the tight restrictions of state control that currently exist.”

Ashurbeyli said their mission is to act as guardians of the Earth, and the “nation” would first get to work building a protective shield to protect Earth from debris, asteroids and coronal mass ejections from the sun.

Ashurbeyli aims to apply to UN for the status of statehood as soon as applications for Asgardian citizenship goes above 100,000.

Currently, all space programs need to be supervised and authorized by a sovereign state located on Earth, but Asgardian aims to become a sovereign state of its own, which seems to be quite a prospect indeed!

An online registration form has been opened for applications for citizenship, and the citizenship is being awarded on first come first served basis with the first 100,000 qualifying for automatic citizenship.

The nation has been named after the city in the sky ruled by Odin in Norse mythology. Asgardia aims to become a member of the United Nations with its own flag and national anthem.

Details of all the logistics, planning and execution of the concept are still foggy, and no explanation on the process of floating the nation, its costs, its moral and practical implications, etc. have been given as yet.

The project will get underway in late 2017 when a satellite will be launched into a low-Earth orbit. Whether it is feasible or not, only time will tell. But it sure is exciting to even consider the prospect!
