What Is the Oldest Artificial Satellite Still Orbiting Earth?

More than six decades after its launch, Vanguard 1 remains the oldest artificial satellite still orbiting Earth. Launched by the United States on March 17, 1958, the tiny spacecraft continues circling the planet long after its mission ended, making it one of the most enduring artifacts of the early Space Age.

Built by the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory for the International Geophysical Year, Vanguard 1 was designed to study Earth’s atmosphere and the effects of space on satellites. It also became the first satellite to generate power using solar cells, a technological breakthrough that helped shape the future of spacecraft design. Although its batteries failed after just 20 days, its solar panels continued powering onboard systems until 1964.

The satellite weighs just 1.47 kilograms (3.25 pounds) and measures only about 16.5 centimeters (6.5 inches) in diameter. Despite its small size, it played a major role in advancing early satellite technology and collecting valuable scientific data during the dawn of the space race.

Scientists originally estimated that Vanguard 1 could remain in orbit for thousands of years. However, improved models accounting for atmospheric drag and other orbital effects have revised that estimate to roughly 240 years. Although the satellite no longer transmits data, researchers continue to study its orbit to better understand how spacecraft age after decades in space.

The possibility of bringing Vanguard 1 back to Earth has also attracted interest. Engineers have proposed imaging the satellite to assess its condition before attempting a recovery mission. One concept involves lowering its orbit for capture, while another suggests transporting it to the International Space Station before returning it to Earth.

If recovered, Vanguard 1 could provide scientists with a rare opportunity to examine how prolonged exposure to radiation, micrometeoroids, and the harsh space environment affects spacecraft materials over nearly seven decades.

For now, however, the recovery remains only a concept. Technical challenges, including the satellite’s spin, fragile antennas, and lack of attachment points, combined with the mission’s expected cost, mean no retrieval effort has been approved.
