At CES 2026, a live demonstration quietly crossed a threshold many researchers have talked about for years but rarely shown in public. On the exhibition floor, two physical humanoid robots held a continuous, unscripted conversation with each other for more than two hours, with no human prompts, no teleoperation, and no cloud based control, according to the company behind the system.

The demonstration was staged by Realbotix, which presented two humanoid robots named Aria and David. Unlike tightly choreographed robotics showcases, the exchange unfolded in real time and in full view of attendees at CES 2026. Both robots were powered entirely by on device AI, processing perception, language, and responses locally rather than relying on remote servers.

Visually, the robots displayed limited facial expression and body movement, falling well short of the fluidity seen in high profile humanoids like Ameca or even modern AI voice assistants. Online viewers described the robots as stiff and mannequin like, highlighting the gap between conversational intelligence and expressive realism.

Alongside the robot to robot exchange, Realbotix also demonstrated human interaction capabilities using a third humanoid unit. The company showcased its patented vision system, embedded directly into the robot’s eyes, which allowed it to visually track people, identify individuals, and interpret facial and vocal cues during conversation. According to Realbotix, this system enables more natural social engagement by combining vision, speech, and contextual understanding in real time.

What made the demonstration notable was not how smooth it looked, but how exposed it was. Most humanoid robot demos rely on heavy scripting or remote operators to avoid visible failure. Realbotix instead allowed its systems to operate freely, revealing current limitations alongside genuine autonomy.
