Just like we see the moon rising and setting , out in the space, and in particular from the Moon you can actually view the Earth doing the same. Except, it looks only far more beautiful because it is home!
You can now watch this mesmerising shot taken by Japan’s Kaguya spacecraft in October 2008. The spacecraft used a pair of onboard 2.2 megapixel HDTV sensors. And although it might look like a fuzzy footage, this is some of the most detailed and high-definition video ever shot from the Moon.
This incredible sight comes to us courtesy a mission by the Japanese Space Agency, JAXA between 2007 and 2009, which entailed three probes orbiting the Moon. This was part of their Selenological and Engineering Explorer (SELENE) mission, and it was then that Kaguya captured all the amazing sights on a film.
Astronomer Bill Dunford said in a post that the video wasn’t released before due to its imperfections. He writes,
“One reason they weren’t previously released may be that some of them are ‘marred’ by lens flare and other imperfections, but I think such things lend interesting visual texture and context to the images and videos,” says Dunford.
JAXA has also released an entire cache of Earthrise images and footage, which are a real gold mine for all of the space junkies.
