Watch Colorized And Upscaled Footage Of The Hindenburg Disaster In 4K Resolution

On a flight over New Jersey on 6, 1937, the enormous German airship Hindenburg suddenly engulfed in flames while attempting to dock with its mooring tower. It took 32 seconds for the zeppelin to end up in flames. 35 people on the airship and one member of the ground crew lost their lives in the crash.

The cause was thought to be a spark of static electricity, but it is not definite. The original concept of the infamous airshi[p included filling the zeppelin with non-flammable helium gas, which the United States had a ban on exporting. German engineers had constructed it this way, hoping that the ban would be lifted but it did not. As a result, flammable hydrogen was used and after 62 successful flights, the tragic incident came along.

The pictures of the incident became widely circulated and were also seen on the album cover for Led Zeppelin’s self-titled 1969 album or as a cutaway scene in Family Guy. Now, it has become a topic for AI research.

A YouTuber has upscaled, restored, and colorized the pictures of the Hindenberg airship flying above New York City, as well as the disaster that followed using neural network artificial intelligence (AI), as first reported by IFL Science.

This footage comprises 10 round flights between the U.S. and Germany, along with the disaster which takes place toward the end of the footage. It can be seen in the video created by the YouTube channel Neural Networks and Deep Learning.

The footage was improved to 4K resolution at 60 fps by using various neural networks and deep learning using Topaz Labs. Proper settings and tuning have led the footage to be as clear as the day. It feels like it has come to life again and it exhibits the tragedy more clearly than ever before with state-of-the-art technology.
