People misinterpreting what vehicle automation can achieve is a worrying trend on the roads that might put them in dangerous circumstances.
A recent incident involving a driver of a Ford Super Duty underscores the dangers of holding such misconceptions. Instagram user @c.crawford posted the popular video, which shows Cameron James relaxing in the rear seat of his fast-moving Ford F-450 Platinum crew cab. Despite the video’s caption suggesting that the “F450 driving itself,” the truck is not equipped with the advanced automation technologies required for autonomous driving.
Ford’s automated technologies, such as the hands-free BlueCruise system, highlight the importance of the driver’s continuous focus on the road. However, the F-450 model on issue isn’t equipped with BlueCruise. Instead, it provides essential driver assistance functions like lane-keeping and adaptive cruise control, which are meant to be used when the driver is in control and has both hands on the wheel.
People have gotten around Ford’s attempts to enforce safe driving habits with pressure sensors on the steering wheel, resembling situations that have happened to Tesla drivers. Some Tesla owners have posted videos of themselves pulling similar “pranks,” which draw attention to a worrying trend of careless driving.
Large, heavy vehicles, such as the 8,000-pound F-450 crew cab, increase the risk of driver negligence. While Tesla’s operations are being scrutinised for possibly deceiving customers, people like Cameron James need to stop driving recklessly immediately.
Considering the Federal investigation into BlueCruise incidents, it is critical to prioritize road safety and stop the spread of false information on vehicle automation that could jeopardise more people. Responsible driving behaviours and legislative measures are crucial to reducing dangers and guaranteeing the security of all road users.
