The Wall is a 146-inch 4K Tv that has just been revealed by Samsung at the CES in Las Vegas. The massive TV is said to have been designed by using a modular system of smaller panels grouped together. This means that the TV display can be made smaller if required. According to Samsung, The Wall is “the world’s first consumer modular MicroLED 146-inch TV.”
Jonghee Han, President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics spoke to the gathered crowd at CES: “At Samsung, we are dedicated to providing consumers with a wide range of cutting-edge screen experiences. As the world’s first consumer modular MicroLED television, ‘The Wall’ represents another breakthrough. It can transform into any size and delivers incredible brightness, color gamut, color volume and black levels. We’re excited about this next step along our roadmap to the future of screen technology, and the remarkable viewing experience it offers to consumers.”
The huge model on display is 4K, but the use of MicroLED technology means that each display can adapt to a different size, resolution or form. The tiny LEDs serve as their own light source and do not require a backlight. This results in a high contrast footage that is better than the traditional LCD screens.
The MicroLED technology uses Gallium Nitride and an array of millions of tiny LEDs to make the image. The Wall claims to produce 2,000 nits of brightness and this technology, even though it is still emerging is more longlasting than its closest competitor, the OLED. Samsung has broken through the problems faced by the industry when it comes to such large screen sizes. They said at the CES that it was to “highlight the capabilities inherent in MicroLED technology.”
Samsung has confirmed that The Wall will be making its way to the market this same year and in a range of different sizes. Speaking of range, it will most probably be out of our range as it will be heavily priced. However, this is the first step in the technology and will pave the way for the future and maybe one day the technology will become common and will be affordable to all.
