Hello and welcome to yet another amazing video by Engineering Explained. Jason Fenske is becoming our friendly neighbourhood hero with his amazing videos that are well-explained and quite thoughtful actually. It is not every day that you find a person who has a passion for something and can break it down into simpler ways so that everyone can understand the different phenomena. Jason Fenske has the ability to do exactly that when it comes to cars, their working, and various components. Today’s video is about Volvo’s engine!
The engine lineup of Volvo used to offer a variety of options. This kept the costs of the individual engines towards the higher end. However, the different variants have been condensed into a single engine architecture, that features diesel and gasoline inline four-cylinder variants. Moving further, the gasoline four-cylinder of Volvo engine also features a turbocharger and a supercharger. The gasoline four-cylinder can still offer good fuel efficiency while providing an amazing response, high horsepower, and a wide torque curve.
Because of the above-mentioned amazing features of the T6 engine architecture, the T6 engine architecture has secured multiple Ward’s Auto 10 Best Engine awards. The video that Engineering Explained has made is about Jason Fenske exploring the 2018 Volvo S90 T6 Inscription AWD. This particular twin-charged engine has a horsepower of 316 and a 295 lb-ft of torque. That is not where the coolness ends though; the T8 engine Volvo also brings in a crank-integrated starter generator (C-ISG) along with a rear-axle electric motor for AWD. The outcome? A plug-in hybrid that offers instantaneous torque, loads of power, and yet a good fuel efficiency.
