Toyota’s Humanoid Robot Breaks World Record For Longest Basketball Shot

Toyota’s humanoid robot, CUE6, has made headlines by breaking the Guinness World Record (GWR) for the longest basketball shot by a humanoid robot. The AI-powered marvel stunned onlookers with a shot from an impressive 24.55 meters (80 feet 6 inches), achieved on September 26 in Nagakute, Aichi, Japan. For perspective, this distance is nearly the length of an NBA court, which measures 29 meters (94 feet).

CUE6’s achievement marks its second GWR title. Toyota engineers have been refining the robot’s capabilities since the original CUE prototype’s creation in 2017. Initially a side project by nine Toyota volunteers, CUE began as a LEGO prototype and gradually evolved into a sophisticated AI-powered basketball player. Its earlier iterations gained recognition for their precision and innovation, with CUE3 setting its first GWR in 2019 by completing 2,020 consecutive basketball free throws.

The robot’s journey has been characterized by steady improvements. CUE progressed from making free throws to performing complex tasks like receiving the ball, positioning itself, and executing three-point shots. The sixth-generation CUE6, introduced in December 2022, brought enhanced features, including modified hands and foot cameras for improved ball tracking. By integrating advanced AI, CUE6 can analyze errors, adjust its posture, arm position, and shot strength, mirroring an athlete’s adaptability.

For the record-breaking attempt, the team aimed to push the boundaries of robotics and AI. After narrowly missing its first shot, CUE6 succeeded on its second attempt, landing the historic 24.55-meter basket. The accomplishment highlights Toyota’s dedication to innovation and the potential of robotics in sports.

Looking ahead, the CUE team envisions even greater feats, such as robots performing slam dunks. CUE6’s success not only demonstrates the capabilities of AI and robotics but also inspires possibilities for future advancements, redefining the relationship between technology and sports.
