Siemens Gamesa claims its SG 14-222 DD offshore wind turbine has world-record power output.
The prototype of the 14MW machine, which has been running in Osterild in Denmark since last December, produced 359MWh in 24 hours, according to the Spanish-German OEM, the most by a single turbine in that timeframe.
It was allowed to run for 24 hours with an average production of 14.95MW – creating 359MWh – between 12.30 pm on 6 October and 12.30 pm on 7 October, according to a Siemens Gamesa spokesperson.
According to the turbine manufacturer, the electric utility company at the test location verified the power production data. According to Siemens Gamesa, that’s enough to power a medium-sized electric car for 1.8 million kilometers.
The SG 14-222 DD is Siemens Gamesa’s flagship model in the offshore wind sector, where it has already received several large orders, most recently at the 882MW Moray West project in Scotland.
The Siemens Gamesa turbine is one of the machines available from Western and Chinese OEMs seeking to power giga-scale projects, including Vestas and China’s MingYang and Goldwind.
Siemens Gamesa has received firm orders and preferred supplier agreements to deliver its flagship offshore wind turbine for projects off the coasts of the United Kingdom, Taiwan, and the United States.
The firm intends to start full market deployment in 2024.
