In today’s age and technology, smartphones are equipped with some of the best camera lens, sometimes even outshining the image taken with a DSLR. And when it comes to impressive camera specs, Sony has proved it time and again that its phones are capable of shooting impressive pictures. This time, Sony is further bridging the gap by introducing a 1-inch Exmor sensor into the upcoming Xperia Pro-1 handset and change the camera game once again.
The main camera in the triple-camera array makes use of a tweaked version of the 20-megapixel 1-inch stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor from Sony’s RX100 VII compact camera by limiting the output to 12-MP due to optimization problems. The RX100 VII camera offers 315 phase-detection high-speed autofocus points and covers 90% of the frame, up to 20 frames per second with auto focus and auto exposure, 12-bit RAW shooting capabilities, “outstanding low light performance” and 4K video at up to 120 fps.
The Xperia Pro-1 is not the first smartphone to employ a 1-inch type image sensor. Other smartphones with the same sensor include Panasonic’s CM1 from 2015, Sharp’s Aquos R6 from earlier in 2021 and Leitz Phone 1 from July 2021. But what makes Sony’s Pro-1 so special is that they have included the big sensor in a triple camera array and shrank the size of everything else in a fairly slim headset that is only 8.9mm thick.
The phone features a dedicated shutter button on the side that rocks the same switch module as the RX100 camera and users can long-press this button to launch a “Photography Pro” mode to access the advanced camera settings. With the Videography Pro and Cinematography Pro feature, vloggers and movie-makers don’t need to buy an expensive camera and can make use of Pro-1 as their main phone-cum-camera!
Sony has also launched an external monitor for the smartphone which allows vloggers to see themselves while using the main camera in selfie mode (that solves 99 problems). Coming to the other specs of the smartphone, it has Snapdragon 888 5G processing chip and supports 12GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage. It runs Android 11 with Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2 for high resolution wireless audio playback.
Pre-orders for the Xperia Pro-1 have started for $1799.99 with shipping as soon as December so what are you waiting for?
