This New Solar Panel Folds Itself Before Hail Strikes, And Produces Up to 40% More Electricity

Researchers in Austria have developed a new solar panel system that not only follows the sun throughout the day to generate significantly more electricity, but also folds itself shut when severe weather approaches to protect against hail, snow, and strong winds.

The system, called FLAPTrack, short for Face-to-Face Lay-Down Anti-Degradation Protection, was developed by the Institute of Electrical Measurement and Sensor Technology at TU Graz. Unlike conventional fixed solar panels, FLAPTrack uses dual-axis tracking to continuously adjust its position horizontally and vertically, keeping the modules aligned with the sun for maximum energy production. A prototype rated at 1.8 kWp has already been installed on a university rooftop in Graz for real-world testing.

Solar panels generate the most electricity when sunlight strikes them at a perpendicular angle. By tracking the sun’s movement from sunrise to sunset, FLAPTrack increases annual energy production by nearly 40% compared to fixed photovoltaic systems. On particularly favorable days, researchers recorded energy gains of up to 56%.

The system performs especially well during the morning and evening, when electricity demand is often at its highest. Researchers say the tracking mechanism can produce more than twice as much electricity as conventional solar installations during these periods, potentially easing pressure on the power grid.

One of FLAPTrack’s most distinctive features is its built-in weather protection. The system connects to local weather stations and forecasting models, allowing it to detect approaching hailstorms, heavy snowfall, or high winds. When dangerous conditions are expected, the solar panels automatically fold face-to-face and lie flat, shielding the delicate solar cells from impact. A heavy-duty protective net covers the exposed rear side to provide additional protection.

The folding design also prevents snow accumulation on the panels, helping maintain winter performance, particularly in northern regions where the sun remains low on the horizon for much of the year.

Researchers are currently collecting long-term data on the prototype’s performance and durability. If the technology proves successful at larger scales, FLAPTrack could offer solar farm operators a way to increase electricity generation while reducing weather-related maintenance and repair costs.
