This New High-Speed Military Amphibious Vehicle Skims The Waves Using Surface Effect

Textron Systems is revolutionizing military logistics with its innovative Surface Effect amphibious transport, the SECAT, designed specifically for the US Navy and Marines. In response to shifting geopolitical dynamics, particularly the focus on the Indopacific region, Textron is addressing the need for rapid deployment and transportation of military assets to remote coastal areas and islands.

Unlike traditional landing ships, the SECAT operates on Surface Effect Ship (SES) technology, akin to heavy-payload Ground Effect aircraft. By utilizing flexible bow and stern seals that trap air between its side hulls, the SECAT achieves remarkable speed and efficiency by raising itself nearly out of the water, reducing drag resistance. This unique design enables the SECAT to skim the waves at speeds exceeding 50 knots (57 mph, 92 km/h) while carrying up to 50 tonnes of cargo.

Impressive are the capabilities of this amphibious transport. Its shallow draft of merely 4 feet (1.2 meters) allows it to effortlessly navigate shallow waters, facilitating direct cargo delivery to undeveloped shores sans the necessity of port facilities. Furthermore, this shallow draft bolsters survivability by diminishing vulnerability to mines and submarines.

Equipped with a formidable gun mounted on its bow, the SECAT ensures protection against potential threats during operations. Its “dry feet” Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo) configuration allows for efficient loading and unloading of cargo and personnel, enabling seamless transfer between naval assault ships and conventional RoRo freighters. This versatility extends its utility beyond military applications, facilitating logistics in various scenarios.

The SECAT’s impressive range further enhances its strategic value, with the ability to cover 500 nautical miles (575 miles, 926 km) in high seas at top speed or 2,000 nautical miles (2,300 miles, 3,700 km) at 20 knots (23 mph, 37 km/h). This range, coupled with its high-speed maneuverability and shallow draft, provides military planners with unparalleled flexibility in deploying assets to remote and contested areas.

Moreover, the SECAT’s capability to rendezvous with conventional RoRo freighters at sea enhances logistical support by allowing these vessels to remain outside conflict areas while facilitating efficient cargo transfer.

Textron’s SECAT represents a significant advancement in military transportation technology, offering a versatile solution to the evolving challenges of modern warfare. Its combination of speed, efficiency, and adaptability positions it as a vital asset for naval operations in diverse environments, ensuring rapid and effective deployment of military forces and equipment.
