A new architectural marvel could redefine stadium design in Las Vegas. The Oakland Athletics’ new baseball stadium, developed by Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), will be located on nine acres on the Las Vegas Strip, but it won’t just be any stadium.
Renderings released by the Oakland Athletics show that the stadium’s exterior features a metal shell resembling a spherical armadillo, a unique and eye-catching feature that distinguishes it from other stadium designs. Five overlapping seashells, similar to baseball pennants, not only create a visual aesthetic but also serve a practical purpose. Their layout was carefully designed to reduce the sun’s glare on the players and allow indirect natural light to illuminate the interior through skylights.
One of the stadium’s most intriguing features is its pre-wired glass wall which will be the largest of its kind in the world. This innovative design uses tall beams to hold the glass in place, allowing clear views of New York’s iconic New York Hotel skyline and the Las Vegas Strip.
The stadium’s interior is designed for ease of connectivity and navigation, with a raised open-air plaza connecting to existing bridges and a clearly marked second-floor entrance. The large atrium serves as a multi-purpose theater, enhancing the stadium’s many features beyond baseball.
Although it is wonderful, the stadium was built with security in mind. In addition to the new air conditioning in the seats, natural light and shading systems are also designed to reduce total energy consumption.
