A Chinese-developed device that uses artificial intelligence, LiDAR, radar and a blue laser to hunt down mosquitoes has moved from crowdfunding project to commercial product, with Photon Matrix now accepting preorders for its outdoor mosquito air-defense system.
The Photon Matrix Blue Laser Mosquito Air Defense is designed for backyards, campsites, outdoor restaurants and other mosquito-prone areas. The company says the device can identify mosquitoes as small as 2 millimeters and track insects flying at speeds of up to 1 meter per second.
The system combines LiDAR, millimeter-wave radar and AI-powered vision to identify potential mosquito targets. When its sensors detect an insect within a six-meter, 90-degree scanning area, an internal galvanometer positions the laser and fires at the target.
Photon Matrix says the system is designed to distinguish mosquitoes from other flying insects, such as butterflies. The company describes the blue laser primarily as a visual feature, while the actual targeting system is designed to eliminate mosquitoes rather than simply illuminate them.
The device also connects to a smartphone app that records mosquito kills, generates heat maps and provides data about activity around the machine. Users can adjust the scanning angle and range, schedule operating times and even compare their results on a global leaderboard.
For outdoor use, the system can be paired with a 20,000-mAh power bank that provides roughly four hours of continuous operation away from an outlet. An optional rotating base allows the unit to turn 360 degrees, expanding its coverage.
Photon Matrix is also offering an indoor version that replaces the visible blue laser with an infrared system. The company says the indoor model is designed for enclosed spaces and operates quietly, with both versions producing less noise than a whisper.
The company has not yet provided broad independent testing of the system’s real-world performance, and production is still catching up with preorder demand. Photon Matrix offers a 12-month warranty and free shipping, with delivery availability depending on the destination.
The outdoor blue-laser model is currently priced at $1,088, reduced from $1,288, while the indoor infrared version costs $988, down from $1,188.
