YouTube channel The Action Lab shared one of their science-based experiments and this time, they used a Tesla coil. This coil has inspired various electricity experiments. It has been used in nanotubes, force fields, guns as well as in many other creative applications. However, it has never been tested inside a vacuum chamber. To see the results, this YouTuber hosted a show with a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering and found the answer. During the experiment, they sparked various purple lights, however, this was not all.
The video description states, “n this video I show you what happens when you put a Tesla Coil in a Vacuum chamber! Will it still spark. Can there be sparks in a vacuum? Then I talk about a cool law that relates electric sparks to pressure Paschen’s law.” The law being used here is the equation which gives the breakdown voltage between two electrodes in a gas as a function of pressure and gap length. It was named after a German physicist Friedrich Paschen who discovered it in 1889. Watch the video below to see the amazing effects on the coil.
