The world is heading towards synthetic products and even the food we consume has the potential of being artificially produced or created. This infusion of technology in food will lessen the burden on the natural sources of acquiring food. For example, the meat, if artificially engineered, can reduce our dependence on animals for fulfilling our needs. This can lead to a more sustainable future.
A company in the biotech industry has discovered a way to make the meat instead of acquiring from animals. It is not a plant-based product either and is grown in the laboratory. Through this technique, they can make the meat in the amount almost equal to the one needed to make 3000 normal sized hamburgers. The company, Future Meat Technologies is expected to dispatch the products for retailing by 2022.
The process is environmentally friendly as well and is reported to have decreased green house gas emissions by around 86%and uses 96% less water than the conventional meat processing methods. The meat produces are cell-based, and it can produce all kinds of meat including chicken, beef, pork, etc. The whole process is 20 times quicker than raising and slaughtering animals for food. Moreover, it saves companies the hassle of slaughtering the animals and dealing with the mess created in the process. This further contributes to less wastage and mess.
According to the Chief Scientific Officer of Future Meat Technologies, the cost of chicken will be decreased significantly to under 10 dollars which makes up to around a 1000 times lower cost than the traditional chickens. This breakthrough is immensely important for the target market that focuses on less animal cruelty and healthy food options. The rate of production is faster and more efficient. The cost of production is less and economical with more decreases expected in the future. This could very well create a transformation in the meat industry.
