This Is Mazda’s Tesla Model Y Rival

Mazda unveiled the EZ-60 SUV, which plans to compete against the Tesla Model Y after its Weibo platform release. This SUV serves as the SUV equivalent of the EZ-6 sedan from last year. Mazda’s EV expansion strategy relies on its partnership with Chinese state-owned automaker Changan.

The 50:50 joint venture between Mazda and Changan has enabled the launch of the 6e in Europe since its establishment more than ten years ago. The EZ-60 will become available globally under the name CX-6e. The EZ-60 represents a production version of the Arata concept, which seeks to replace the MX-30 since it failed to achieve market success. The SUV features design elements including sharp lines with a sporty profile together with the distinctive flying buttresses, which are uncommon for this vehicle class.

The EZ-60 contains DNA from the Deepal S07, which suggests it will include a fully electric powertrain with an optional range-extending 1.5-liter gas engine. The hybrid version of the EZ-6 sedan may not become available in Europe because the vehicle exists exclusively as a pure electric model in its current market.

Mazda plans to unveil the EZ-60’s interior design at Auto Shanghai 2025, but it should share its main features with the EZ-6, including a central screen and few physical controls, resulting in a more luxurious feel than the Chinese version.

Mazda and Changan are currently developing two more EV models that will reach the market between 2028 and 2030. Mazda continues to build its own EV platform, which will lead to the release of its first model in 2027. The MX-30 continues its production outside North America, where customers can choose between EV and rotary range-extender and mild-hybrid versions.
