This Is How They Are Making Artificial Snow For 2014 Winter Olympics

Is that amazing or what

lets make snowEnjoying winters, Yes? Although most of you already know, for those who don’t know, Winter Olympics are to be hosted in Sochi, Russia next month and the problem with Winter Olympics is that it is ‘Winters’ Olympics while the temperature in Sochi is around 55 degrees. We don’t mind mild temperatures but this means that there won’t be any freezing and hence, no snow which is a trademark sign of winters. So, ideally speaking, you would want it to snow during winter olympics and for that, Sochi has basically acquired help of snow machines in order to generate snow for the long awaited Winter Games.

The snow machines have been used in the past as well so there is no big surprise there but what really got us excited was how the SMI snow makers explained how their machines work. The video at the end of this post is about SMI Snow makers explains how the system works. They talk about water source, type of pressure required and the quality of snow they are hoping to produce. The organizers have approximately 400 snowmaking cannons producing snow crystals after cool air and water mix at just the right temperature.
From what we know so far, as per the manufacturers, the artificially generated snow will look like two weeks old snow and a special glue will be used to hold together the snow when it starts to melt. Russian Authorities have also stored huge quantities of snow from last year in special vaults where they are covered with insulating blankets. Therefore, the organizers are well prepared for any contingency!
