This Giant 150-Foot Wing Could Change Cargo Shipping Forever Without Using a Drop of Fuel

A 150-foot-tall rigid wing sail has officially entered service aboard one of the world’s largest vehicle carriers, marking a major step forward for wind-assisted commercial shipping. Installed on the 230-meter (754-foot) vessel Tirranna, the system recently completed harbor and sea acceptance tests and has now begun operating on commercial voyages.

Developed by Oceanbird, a joint venture between Alfa Laval and Wallenius Lines, the Wing560 measures 46 meters (150 feet) high and 14 meters (45 feet) wide. Unlike traditional sails, the rigid wing is designed to generate mechanical thrust directly from the wind, helping reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions. The installation follows a structured certification process, including approval from classification society DNV earlier this year.

The wing was installed at Damen Shipyard in Rotterdam between June 21 and June 24, after which Tirranna immediately returned to its commercial shipping schedule. Oceanbird has also placed a team of engineers aboard the vessel to monitor the system’s real-world performance, evaluate its automated controls, and collect operational data during its first voyages.

Large vehicle carriers present unique aerodynamic challenges because of their tall, flat hulls, which are more susceptible to crosswinds. The data gathered during these initial trials will help engineers refine the technology for broader deployment across similar cargo ships.

Oceanbird CEO Amrit Bhullar described the milestone as an important opportunity to validate the company’s years of development work under real operating conditions. Alfa Laval’s Ocean Division President, Martijn Bergink, said the successful installation moves the project from concept to practical application.

The demonstration also serves as a key milestone for the Orcelle Horizon project, an initiative funded by the European Union and supported by 11 industry partners. On Tirranna, the single Wing560 installation is expected to improve fuel efficiency by about 10%.

In the longer term, the consortium aims to develop a new generation of Roll-on/Roll-off cargo ships capable of meeting more than half of their propulsion needs through wind power while maintaining standard commercial schedules. If the ongoing sea trials prove successful, rigid wing sails could become an increasingly common feature on future cargo fleets seeking to reduce fuel costs and emissions.
