Vessev, a pioneering water-transportation start-up, has just introduced the VS-9, a revolutionary electric ferry integrating America’s Cup hydrofoil technology. Designed to be efficient, green, and accessible, this 10-passenger vessel is being hailed as the most advanced electric commercial boat to date.
One notable feature of the VS-9 is its application of hydrofoil technology, which is akin to that of elite America’s Cup racers. This enables the ferry to lift its hull approximately three feet above the water, providing a comfortable ride even at top speeds of twenty-five knots (28 mph or forty-five km/h). Amazingly, even in inclement weather, travelers can enjoy a glass of champagne spill-free because the hydrofoils’ high-precision flaps react to the changing conditions, maintaining efficiency and stability.
Charging the VS-9 is convenient at marinas equipped with power infrastructure. If DC charging is available, it can achieve 0.8 nautical miles (1.5 km) of range per minute of charging. This impressive efficiency extends to its operational costs, as it is estimated to save up to 95% on fuel compared to traditional diesel or gasoline-powered vessels. In testing, the VS-9 demonstrated that it costs 25 times less for fuel than its chase boat counterpart.
Eric Laakman, Vessev’s CEO, brings his expertise from leading the Apple Watch program. His vision for sustainable maritime travel was inspired by a year-long sailing expedition, which led him to New Zealand and ultimately to Vessev. He sees the VS-9 as a catalyst in the global transition to sustainable energy use in marine transport.
The launch of the VS-9 includes a partnership with Fuller360, New Zealand’s largest ferry company, to introduce the world’s first electric hydrofoiling vessel certified for premium tourism. Mike Horne, CEO of Fuller360, emphasized their goal of becoming 100% electric or hydrogen-operated by 2040, with the VS-9 being a crucial step towards that vision.
The VS-9 measures 29.4 feet in length and weighs 8,000 pounds when fully loaded. It boasts a cruising speed of 25 knots with a maximum speed of 30 knots (35 mph or 55 km/h) and a battery range of up to 50 nautical miles at cruising speed. Priced at $620,000, several units have already been sold, signaling a strong market interest in this innovative vessel.
