With the Polestar Phone, Geely and Volvo Cars’ electric vehicle (EV) brand Polestar has joined the smartphone market. It was released on April 23 and comes after the September 2023 release of a phone by Nio, another Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer.
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, 16GB of RAM, and a whopping 1TB of storage are just a few of the high-end features of the Polestar Phone. BOE is the source of the 6.79-inch, 2K+ resolution display. A 5,050 mAh battery that supports 80W wired and 50W wireless charging powers the gadget.
Uniquely, the phone runs on Polestar Phone OS, an operating system details of which are limited for now. However, it does include features like AI image search and generation, knowledge query functions, and the ability to activate virtual assistants with a dedicated “mBack” button.
The new Polestar 4 EV was unveiled at the same time as the phone. It’s interesting to note that Polestar is giving customers who buy the new car a free Polestar Phone. There are two versions of the Polestar 4, with prices starting at RMB 339,900 (about $4700).
It appears that automakers are starting to get interested in the smartphone market. At RMB 6,499 (about $900), Nio’s phone is priced marginally less than the Polestar Phone and places an emphasis on communication with automobiles by including features like a smart car key and remote control capabilities. Polestar may use similar tactics, especially in light of the free phone that comes with the Polestar 4 purchase.
Earlier in April, Geely, Polestar’s parent company, announced a collaboration with FAW to create a high-end smartphone for their Hongqi brand. This further indicates a growing focus on smartphone integration within the EV market.
