Wang, a 24-year-old Asian American student, had been experimenting with Playground AI, an AI-image creator, and shared the results on Twitter. To her astonishment, the AI tool altered her appearance, turning her into a Caucasian woman with lighter skin and blue eyes.

Initially amused by the outcome, Wang quickly recognized the significance of the incident. She highlighted that racial bias is a persistent issue in AI tools, sparking a larger conversation about inclusivity and fairness in the realm of artificial intelligence. Her experience raises concerns about potential consequences in more serious situations, like AI being used in hiring processes where certain racial or ethnic groups could be unintentionally favored.

Racial and gender bias in AI algorithms is not a new issue. A study by AI firm Hugging Face revealed that AI image generators, like DALL-E2, were prone to gender and racial bias. She demands computer engineers to consider techniques to lessen these issues and guarantee that AI technologies don’t continue unfair methods.
