This is not for you if you’ve had a bad flying experience like a long-haul flight in Economy class. KLM is offering something that is both attractive and luxurious – even if it does not get off the ground. They are offering a night stay at the grounded McDonnell Douglas MD-11 aircraft. The airline has been transformed into a luxurious apartment. Named as Airplane Apartment, this apartment can offer four guests a unique overnight stay, minus the turbulence.
The KLM aircraft that has successfully chartered 3,675 flights, is now retired and located next to the Schiphol airport in Amsterdam. It was given an impressive interior makeover that converted the aircraft into a 366 sq. meter (3940 sq. ft.) vintage-inspired apartment. The plane features; a study zone, an open plan lounge room, a master bedroom with a king sized bed, second bedroom with two single beds, two kitchens that are fully equipped, 116 jet windows, eight tiny bathrooms and a panoramic cockpit.
The apartment also provides free Wi-Fi, a coffee maker, a library filled with books and magazines, buzzer/wireless intercom and a viewing room, where the guests can enjoy extra room while watching the planes land and take off from the neighboring airport.
There are however some rules that are to be followed by the guests:
- Absolutely no flying
- Do not use the inflatable emergency slide
- No smoking when the cabin sign for no-smoking is on
- Jet engines should not be used to toast marshmallows
- Guests must feed the fish and water the plants
- No consumption of alcohol allowed on board
- Guests are told to treat the plane as if it’s their own
This unique airplane apartment is currently featured on Airbnb, as part of a contest that will let the contestants win a night onboard, and will be available temporarily to house guests from the 28th to the 30th November 2014. Those interested can enroll online through Airbnb website and lucky winners will be flown in from anywhere in the world. Apart from taking part in the contest, if anybody is still interested in spending the night in a grounded jumbo jet, they should check out the Jumbo Hostel, which is located in Stockholm.
