Tesla and SpaceX’s founder and CEO Elon Musk is in the headlines – again – as he revealed his new solar roof product. It involves replacing the roof with solar energy gathering cells, and while replacing the large black slabs of solar panels, they are also amazingly efficient and weatherproof.

The solar roofing comes in four distinct styles, namely “Textured Glass Tile,” “Slate Glass Tile,” “Tuscan Glass Tile, and “Smooth Glass Tile.” The most amazing part is that each of these tiles has a different aesthetic look, but all of them roughly have the same material composition than that of the current roofing materials. Each tile is also transparent to the sun, making it ideal for a solar panel, but become opaque when viewed from an angle, thus, making them aesthetically beautiful.

The current versions are slightly lower in efficiency than the traditional solar panels, two percent to be exact. But the company is already working on a solution with 3M and is looking to improve coatings that will trap the light within and bounce it around resulting in lesser energy losses.

Tesla roof tiles are also quite durable under pressure, as a durability test Tesla posted on Twitter on Saturday proved so.

In terms of pricing, Tesla’s roof claim to be competitive or even better than the cost of a traditional roof when combined with the cost of electricity from the grid. And with all that, it also provides fiscal benefit back to the homeowner after the installation as it adds to the cost of the house. Tesla said that the tiles are at least two or three times more long lasting than asphalt tiles while its durability makes sure that you don’t lose on your investment.

The tiles are capable of generating enough energy to fully power the whole house while the new Powerwall 2.0 battery units are also provided to store the excess.

Musk hopes that solar roof product will be installed as soon as next year summer. Below is an infographic detailing the technical aspects of the technology:
