We have put together a list of countries that are planning to ban diesel cars that rely on diesel combustion engines as soon as possible.
The United Kingdom
The first country on our list is the United Kingdom. The UK wants to ban all kinds of diesel cars by 2040. The country is also working on its goal of making sure that all of the cars on the road are zero-emissions only.
With somewhere in the order of 2.7 million new cars registered in the country in 2016, this plan will have a major impact on domestic car sales over time. Its all in a bid to help clean up the country’s air and reduce its contribution to global emissions.
France
The French government is not far behind from the UK. In fact, it claims that it will be matching the UK’s plan for combustion-engine cars by 2040. The French government says that this is its effort for fighting the ‘fight against climate change.’ After 2040, carmakers will only be able to sell electric vehicles or clean vehicle-alternatives.
Germany
Germany is also taking steps towards the removal of diesel cars from its roads in the future. A number of German cities have already banned older cars from their roads on account of pollution. Angela Merkel said, ‘I cannot name an exact year yet, but the approach is right because if we quickly invest in more charging infrastructure and technology for electric cars, a general changeover will be structurally possible.’
India
Surprisingly enough, India is also working towards the goal of removing of diesel-engine cars from its roads by 2030. These vehicles will be swapped with electrically powered alternatives by that time. India is suffering from poor air quality and has some of the most populated cities in the world.
Norway
Norway is also hoping to take out diesel cars from its roads as soon as possible. The country’s plans are a bit more ambitious, though. It wants to make sure that all of the new cars are zero-emissions by 2025. Furthermore, it is not just a goal as Norway is making great progress as well. About 40% of the cars that were sold in Norway back in 2016 were either electric or hybrid.
China
China did announce back in 2017 that it wanted to ban gasoline and diesel-engine cars back in 2017. However, it has not yet committed itself to a particular date. As per the future center website, ‘Hainan, with a population of more than 9 million residents, aims to eliminate ICEs in the province by 2030 entirely and is rapidly installing EV charging infrastructure in service of its objective.’
Taiwan
Taiwan is also among the list of countries that wants to remove diesel and gas engine cars from its roads. The country has plans of ceasing the sales of all new diesel and gasoline engine motorcycles by 2035 and will be doing the same with four-wheeled vehicles by 2040. As per road traffic-technology, ‘In 2018, the government stressed that the ban would not affect existing fossil fuel-powered vehicles, with it only enforced for new cars and motorcycles. It is estimated that motorcycles and scooters comprise two-thirds of the country’s registered vehicles, which stands at more than 20 million.’
Brussels in Belgium
Although Belgium, as a nation, has yet to commit to banning of diesel-engine cars, some cities in Belgium are already taking steps in this particular direction. For instance. Brussels has announced that it wishes to ban all of the diesel cars by 2030.
Japan
The last country on our list is Japan. It is working in collaboration with manufacturers such as Honda, Nissan, and Toyota to make sure that all new cars are either hybrid or electric by 2050. This working group has been named METI and is also aiming at causing a reduction in passenger vehicle greenhouse gas emission by 90% of 2010 levels this year.
