The Nano Tracks N320 is the world’s smallest fully functional excavator, designed to fit in the palm of your hand, but don’t mistake it for a toy. At just 1/64th the size of a real excavator, it comes equipped with six fully independent, proportional motors for precise control of every movement. Its engineering includes an electronic slip ring, and independently controlled boom, dipper, bucket, swing, and tracks—features that mirror its full-sized counterpart.
Although you can’t operate it from the cabin, the Nano Tracks N320 offers remote control via two modes. One mode provides standard ISO controls, similar to Caterpillar equipment, while the second mode allows individual control of the tracks, mimicking a real-life excavator’s maneuverability.
The N320 was created by Jonathan Abbott directly based on a YouTube channel he had found featuring a group of hobbyists using miniature RC excavators. Unable to purchase one after trying to look for one, he decided to build one of his own. Using CAD skills self-taught and a 3D printer, the first prototype was created in resin. It took some time before he realized that resin was too brittle for such a small machine. Only after spending 2,300 hours was an effective, durable, and repeatable process created to produce mini-excavators.
The Nano Tracks N320 launched on Kickstarter with a goal of raising $20,000 but far exceeded expectations, collecting over $268,000 with 70 days remaining in the campaign. The N320 has captured the imagination of RC enthusiasts worldwide. For $120, backers can pledge for their very own palm-sized, fully functional excavator until the campaign ends.
