Stockholm-based Enerpoly has launched the world’s first zinc-ion battery megafactory. Slated to begin production in 2025, this cutting-edge facility will transform the renewable energy storage landscape.
Founded in 2018, Enerpoly is widely recognized for its zinc-ion battery technology, which offers a safer and more cost-effective alternative to traditional lithium-ion batteries. Zinc-ion batteries are emerging as a promising solution for various energy storage applications, from balancing power grids to portable electronic devices, and even the growing electric vehicle sector.
Enerpoly’s new facility, the Enerpoly Production Innovation Center (EPIC), spans 6,500m² (70,000ft²) and is located in Rosersberg, northern Stockholm. This state-of-the-art megafactory is expected to reach full capacity by 2026, producing 100 megawatt-hours annually, significantly contributing to the clean energy transition. As Enerpoly CEO Eloisa de Castro emphasized, “With EPIC, our focus is firmly on driving sustainable innovation and meeting the growing demand for renewable energy storage.”
Zinc-ion batteries have the potential to revolutionize energy storage, especially given their inherent safety and lower costs compared to lithium-ion batteries. Their versatility spans multiple industries, with potential applications in power grids, portable electronics, and even maritime operations. Zinc-ion technology could be particularly valuable in stabilizing power grids by storing surplus energy from renewable sources like solar and wind.
Additionally, automotive researchers are now exploring zinc-ion batteries for use in electric vehicles. The expansion of the megafactory in July 2024, which included new dry electrode manufacturing equipment, further strengthens Enerpoly’s position as a leader in energy storage solutions. The company highlighted that its advanced production capabilities will lower costs, reduce waste and energy consumption, and ultimately accelerate the development of sustainable battery technologies.
In 2023, Enerpoly successfully raised $8.4 million to support its battery cell and pack production capabilities. The megafactory will enable the company to test its solutions on a large scale, catering to commercial, industrial, and utility applications. With zinc-ion batteries addressing essential energy storage needs, including grid stabilization, backup power, and high-reliability applications, Enerpoly is poised to make a major impact in maritime, critical infrastructure, and urban settings.
Enerpoly’s innovation aligns with broader research in zinc-ion battery technology. Last year, researchers in Korea introduced a smart zinc-ion battery capable of changing colors to indicate charging and discharging status. This color-changing feature, which eliminates the need for separate displays, highlights the growing demand for smarter energy storage solutions, especially in wearable devices.
