World's Best Tall Building Vertically Stacks Lush Green Terraces

The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH), a prominent authority on skyscrapers, has recognized Pan Pacific Orchard as the Best Tall Building Worldwide for 2024.

Standing at an impressive 140.4 meters (461 feet) tall, Pan Pacific Orchard, designed by renowned architecture firm WOHA, offers a blend of luxury and nature across its 35 floors and 347 rooms. The hotel’s front-facing facade features four massive open-air terraces, each uniquely themed and brimming with lush vegetation.

The ground-floor Forest Terrace serves as a verdant entryway, complete with a cascading water plaza and an abundance of trees. Above it lies the Beach Terrace, a tropical sanctuary with a lagoon, sandy beachfront, and palm groves, offering guests a tranquil retreat. Moving up, the Garden Terrace houses the hotel’s bar and lounge, surrounded by manicured gardens, reflection pools, and planter beds. At the very top, the Cloud Terrace offers a space for events, including a ballroom and function rooms, all surrounded by greenery and water features.

These expansive terraces not only enhance the building’s aesthetics but also contribute to its energy efficiency. By integrating natural light and ventilation, the design minimizes the reliance on air conditioning and helps moderate the tropical heat, ensuring comfort for guests while reducing the building’s carbon footprint.

“The project carves out large open-air atria that not only lessen the environmental impact but also create dynamic interactions between nature, the city, and its diverse communities,” CTBUH highlighted.

The building achieves a balance between external and internal spaces, with a 45 percent to 55 percent ratio, optimizing both energy use and sustainability. These innovative features align closely with Singapore’s sustainability goals and demonstrate a forward-thinking approach to urban architecture.

In addition to its extensive greenery, Pan Pacific Orchard incorporates solar panels to reduce energy consumption and employs rainwater collection systems for irrigation. The hotel also processes food waste on-site, further enhancing its eco-friendly operations.

Pan Pacific Orchard’s achievements didn’t stop at the global award. The building also took home the Best Tall Building 100-199 meters Category Award and the Space Within Category Award, the latter recognizing projects with exceptional interior spaces that enhance user experience and functionality.
