The Tesla Cybertruck has dethroned Ford’s F-150 Lightning as the best-selling electric truck in the United States. Despite a slew of reported issues—from slashing owners’ limbs to bricking in water and failing at basic truck tasks—the Cybertruck’s meteoric rise remains unimpeded. Recently named the best-selling vehicle over $100,000, the electric behemoth has now claimed the title of America’s best-selling electric truck.
Tesla’s new flagship electric truck, which began hitting the highways at the end of 2023, outperformed Ford’s F-150 Lightning in sales last month. This achievement marks a significant milestone for Tesla, further solidifying its dominance in the electric vehicle market. The statistics are derived from new car registrations in the U.S., as Tesla does not disclose separate sales figures for America versus the rest of the world. Additionally, the automaker does not break down sales for individual models, which currently include the Model S, Model X, Model Y, Model 3, and Cybertruck.
According to Tesla’s latest filing, covering the three-month period ending in June 2024, the company sold 422,405 Model 3 and Model Y vehicles globally. Its “other models,” presumably including the Cybertruck, accounted for 21,551 deliveries during the same period. This broad category makes it challenging to pinpoint the exact number of Cybertruck units sold, but the overall sales surge suggests a significant contribution from Tesla’s new electric truck.
Despite its challenges, the Cybertruck’s unique design and the strength of Tesla’s brand have driven its popularity. This trend underscores the growing consumer interest in electric trucks, a market once dominated by traditional automakers like Ford. Tesla’s ability to captivate the market, even with a product facing substantial criticism, highlights the brand’s formidable influence and the shifting dynamics in the automotive industry. As the competition in the electric vehicle sector intensifies, Tesla’s Cybertruck sets a new benchmark for what it means to be a best-seller in the electric truck category.
