Tesla’s Graphics Are About To Get Some ‘Unreal’ Treatment

Tesla’s signature in-car visualizations used for features like Autopilot and Full Self-Driving could be getting a major graphical boost. Evidence from recent firmware hints that the electric carmaker may swap its current rendering software for Epic Games’ Unreal Engine.

According to Not a Tesla App, well-known Tesla hacker greentheonly uncovered signs of the switch in Tesla’s 2025.20 firmware for Model S and Model X vehicles equipped with AMD chips. Currently, Tesla relies on the Godot engine for its on-screen driving visualizations.

If the shift happens, Tesla would join the likes of Rivian, Ford, GMC, Volvo, and Lotus, all of which use Unreal Engine to power in-car graphics. While Unreal Engine is best recognized for powering blockbuster video games, Epic Games has been expanding its footprint in the automotive sector, offering tools for real-time 3D rendering and dynamic visualization.

Tesla and Epic Games have not yet responded to requests for comment. However, this wouldn’t be the first intersection between the companies. Tesla’s Cybertruck made a cameo in Fortnite last year.

Switching to Unreal Engine could bring richer, more realistic in-car animations for Autopilot and Full Self-Driving features, potentially improving the way drivers interpret sensor data and road conditions. Beyond visual fidelity, Unreal’s robust toolset could allow Tesla to integrate more interactive and adaptive interface elements over time.
