2021 has been a tricky year for Tesla, with all the accidents and all the people overestimating just how good their autopilot system is. Now it seems something may be wrong with their assembly process as well as Tesla is now recalling thousands of cars across the US because of an issue in their brake caliper bolts. They suspect that the brake caliper bolts may be loose, which can cause a loss of pressure in the tires.
The news came up because of some documents made public by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It details that Tesla is recalling exactly 5,974 vehicles over concerns that their brake caliper bolts might be loose. The recall concerns certain 2019-2021 Model 3 vehicles and 2020-2021 Model Y vehicles.
The Safety Recall Report detailed the defect as follows, “The brake calipers of Model 3 and Model Y vehicles are attached to the wheel knuckle using two fasteners. If a fastener is not secured to the correct specification, the fastener may loosen over time and, in very rare circumstances, may become loose enough or separate from the knuckle such that the caliper makes contact with the inner surface of the wheel rim”.
In the report, Tesla assured that it is not aware of any crash or accident related to the defect and it will still replace or tighten the bolts if necessary for free. This isn’t the first time Tesla has had to recall its vehicles, the last recall was due to touch screen failures back in February. Still, 2021 has not been so kind to the company, the company’s stock closed down 3% yesterday.
The report Tesla filed with the NHTSA also said that an incident last December made Tesla aware of the problem. The incident involved a 2021 Model Y with a missing fastener on the driver-side rear brake caliper. This incident prompted the company to take a look at its assembly process and fix any lingering issues.
