In a surprising move, Elon Musk has confirmed that Tesla is planning to offer a modification package that will transform the Cybertruck into a functional boat, capable of traversing at least 100 meters of water. While Musk has made bold claims in the past about Tesla vehicles having the ability to float briefly, this announcement takes the idea to a new level. The CEO has doubled down on the idea, emphasizing that the Cybertruck, designed as an off-road vehicle, will be “waterproof enough” to serve as a boat for short distances across rivers, lakes, and even seas with calm waters. Musk envisions the Cybertruck being able to cross the water between SpaceX’s Starbase and South Padre Island in Texas, covering a distance of about 360 meters.
The Cybertruck’s Off-Road Mode, revealed during recent deliveries, includes a “Wade Mode” that pressurizes the battery pack to seal it, enhancing its ability to handle water. Lars Moravy, VP of engineering at Tesla, mentioned how Cybertruck owners could connect an electric outboard motor to the pickup truck, effectively turning it into a boat.
Building on Moravy’s statement, Musk confirmed that Tesla plans to offer a modification package for the Cybertruck, enabling it to navigate water. The primary modification involves upgrading the cabin door seals to ensure watertight integrity. While the CEO did not provide specific details about the package or a timeline for its availability, the announcement has already sparked interest and excitement among Tesla enthusiasts.
It’s worth noting that Tesla is not the first to explore the idea of turning the Cybertruck into a boat. Following the initial unveiling of the Cybertruck in 2019, another company designed a kit that could transform the pickup truck into an electric catamaran, showcasing the versatility and creative potential of this futuristic electric vehicle.
