This announcement comes soon after Fourier Intelligence unveiled the GR-1 humanoid robot and Agility Robotics announced its intention to scale up manufacture of bipedal humanoid robots.
Agility Robotics is set to open “RoboFab,” a vast 70,000-square-foot robot factory in Salem, Oregon, which will focus on manufacturing the bipedal robot Digit. The CEO of Agility Robotics, Damion Shelton, emphasized the importance of mass production to enable widespread societal impact, underlining the potential benefits of advanced AI, machine learning, and robotics engineering in achieving this goal.
Fourier Intelligence’s GR-1 humanoid robot was first revealed at the 2023 World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai. This robot is designed to assist patients in various tasks, including transitioning from beds to wheelchairs and lifting objects weighing up to 110 pounds (50 kilograms).
In contrast, Tesla’s Optimus has been met with skepticism since its initial announcement by CEO Elon Musk.
