Something extraordinary occurred in the automotive industry in 2022. Tesla, the electric car company, has beaten BMW as the top premium car brand in the United States. This is the first time in 25 years that a car maker from the United States has held this title.
According to reports, Tesla sold over 491,000 cars in the United States last year, a massive 56 percent increase over the previous year. That’s a lot more than BMW, which sold 332,388 vehicles in the United States during the same period, a 1.3 percent decline from the previous year.
Even more impressive, Tesla raised sales by 56% while total sales in the US premium car market fell by 8%.
Tesla’s achievements did not end there. They also control two-thirds of the electric vehicle market in the United States. That is more than the rest of the electric vehicle industry put together.
But how did Tesla overtake BMW as a luxury car manufacturer, and why are the American elites turning away from conventional luxury car options in favor of Tesla? Many attribute it to Tesla’s state-of-the-art engineering and appealing designs. In addition, the company’s electric cars offer performance and luxury that conventional gas-powered vehicles cannot provide.
Furthermore, a growing number of customers looking to make a more environmentally friendly option find Tesla’s emphasis on sustainability appealing.
The key question is whether any other automaker can dethrone Tesla and take back the top spot. Unfortunately, it appears that it will be some time before anyone catches up to Tesla’s statistics, with BMW still being more than 158,000 vehicles behind.
Nevertheless, one thing is sure: the future of the luxury car market appears to be electric, with Tesla leading the charge.
