If you consider yourself a true motorist and a thrill seeker, you definitely need to cross the Chesapeake Bay Bridge in the United States. This is probably the scariest bridge in the US and people are known to have panic attacks while crossing and it just seems to go on and on forever.
The Chesapeake Bay Bridge is located in Maryland and reaches a height of 200 feet at its topmost point and stretches along a length of 4 long miles. The legislation to build this scariest bridge in the country was passed in 1947 and construction began in 1949. The project cost was $52 million and it was opened to the public in June 1952. At the time it was the longest continuous over-water steel structure and third longest bridge in the world.
It is built at a height of 186 feet and ocean ships can pass underneath it. It means there are a number of occasions when the people driving over the bridge get to see a ship passing underneath the bridge at the same time. For people with extreme height phobia, there is a service, where they can pay drivers to take them across the bridge.
Carolyn Casey had such a traumatizing time on the bridge that she had to hire a driver to take her across. She said, “What happened was I suffered major a panic attack. My peripheral vision went black. I thought I was going to pass out into oncoming traffic.”
