Stephen Hawking, who is now becoming more and more known for spreading chilling predictions, says according to his estimate, human beings will be extinct on Earth within the next 1,000 years. This comes after a recent claim by the eminent theoretical scientist suggesting that if we keep working on artificial intelligence, robots could take over our planet in 100 years.

He also claimed that the only way for the human kind to avoid a mass extinction was to find another habitable planet as soon as possible.

While addressing a crowd at Oxford University in Britain last Tuesday, Stephen Hawking said,

“We must continue to go into space for the future of humanity. I don’t think we’ll survive another 1,000 years without escaping beyond our fragile planet.

According to the Christian Science Monitor, Hawking added,

“Although the chance of a disaster to planet Earth in a given year may be quite low, it adds up over time, and becomes a near certainty in the next 1,000 to 10,000 years. By that time, we should have spread out into space, and to other stars, so a disaster on Earth would not mean the end of the human race.”

Hawking has been known to issue a similar statement back in January when he warned us that we are edging dangerously close to human extinction as a result of our destructive and taxing actions on our planet.

But Hawking did give some hope at the end of his talk,

“Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Try to make sense of what you see, wonder about what makes the universe exist. Be curious. However difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at. It matters that you don’t just give up.”
