The Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA), South Korea’s arms procurement organization, stated on Friday that the country is preparing to use powerful laser weapons, known as the “StarWars Project,” to battle North Korean drones. Within the year, Hanwha Aerospace’s cutting-edge laser equipment will be put into service.
The current generation of laser weapons are notable for their cost-effectiveness and efficiency due to their noiseless, undetectable, and electricity-only operation. Approximately 2,000 won ($1.45) is the cost of each shot, which is much less than typical ammo. With the latest provocations, the deployment of the “Block-I” system is intended to strengthen South Korea’s defense against North Korean unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Five North Korean drones broke into South Korean airspace in December 2022, triggering a military reaction that eventually failed to destroy the drones.
DAPA highlights that these laser systems have shown to be 100% successful in testing, putting them in a position to potentially revolutionize modern warfare. The drone is destroyed by the lasers’ ability to transfer heat, which melts the drone’s surface and ignites interior parts. DAPA official Lee Sang-yoon emphasized that the system’s dependence on power allowed it to go farther in space and operate at the speed of light.
However, some experts urge caution. Hong Sung-pyo, a senior researcher at the Korea Institute for Military Affairs, points out that while promising, laser weapons have yet to be proven in practical applications globally. He notes the operational range limitations, suggesting that while effective within certain distances, the lasers might struggle against more distant targets.
This development comes amid escalating tensions between the two Koreas, which technically remain at war since the Korean War ended in an armistice rather than a peace treaty. With Pyongyang increasing its weapons testing and provocations, including sending balloon-borne trash across the border, Seoul has resumed live-fire drills and suspended a military agreement aimed at reducing tensions. The introduction of the “StarWars” laser weapons marks a significant step in South Korea’s defense strategy against North Korean threats.
