In a groundbreaking collaboration, two of Japan’s corporate giants—Sony and Honda—joined forces over two years ago to revolutionize electric mobility. The result is the Afeela EV, a sleek four-door fastback saloon that marries cutting-edge technology with electric vehicle performance.
The Afeela EV is more than just a car; it is a 50/50 joint effort by Sony and Honda, embodying the best of both companies’ expertise. The electric sedan is powered by two motors, one on each axle, delivering 241 horsepower (180 kW) for an all-wheel-drive configuration. Beneath the surface lies a 91-kWh battery pack, compatible with 150-kW fast charging, and estimated to provide a range of 250–275 miles, putting it in competition with Tesla’s Model 3.
What truly sets Afeela apart is its technological prowess. Equipped with 45 cameras and sensors, the car ensures both driver and passenger safety. The AI system monitors driver activity to prevent collisions, while Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Digital Chassis can execute an astonishing 800 trillion actions per second. This technology not only enhances safety but also provides personalized in-car experiences.
According to Mizuno, the car embodies Sony’s entertainment expertise by incorporating Epic Games’ Unreal Engine. “The most natural way to visualize important data within the car is through intuitive interactive photo-real augmentation, which is what Unreal Engine does best,” said Kim Libreri, Epic Games’ CTO.
The Afeela EV showcases futuristic design elements, including the absence of traditional door handles. Instead, doors open automatically as the car communicates with a companion app on your phone. Alternatively, physical controls are discreetly integrated next to the windows. Once inside, drivers will find a U-shaped steering wheel and a fully digital dashboard with dual screens providing comprehensive visibility.
Passengers are treated to a cocoon-like atmosphere, enhanced by a panoramic roof and ambient lighting. Rear-seat passengers enjoy individual screens for entertainment, while the in-car Ridevu system grants access to Sony Pictures Entertainment’s premium content collection. The car even adjusts settings based on user behavior, such as recommending quicker routes for scheduled meetings.
On the outside, the Afeela resembles Hyundai’s Ioniq 6, boasting a clean roofline, digital mirrors, and 21-inch black alloy wheels. Its standout feature is the “media” light bar on the front fascia, designed for communication and data-sharing with other drivers.
Despite its technological advancements, details such as acceleration, top speed, and on-road performance remain under wraps. Production is set to begin in 2025, with pre-orders opening in the first half of the year. Deliveries in North America are slated for spring 2026.
