Scientists Discover Earth Could Stay Alive for Nearly 2 Billion More Years

New research suggests life on Earth could survive significantly longer than many earlier estimates predicted, offering a more optimistic outlook on the planet’s distant future as the Sun gradually grows brighter over billions of years.

Researchers Jacob Haqq-Misra of Blue Marble Space and Eric Wolf of the University of Colorado Boulder used advanced three-dimensional climate modeling to examine when Earth will become too hostile for complex life. Their findings indicate that land plants could survive for as long as 1.9 billion more years under certain conditions, extending previous estimates that often placed the end of Earth’s habitability at less than 1 billion years from now. The study explores how Earth’s climate and carbon cycle may evolve over immense timescales.

Scientists have long known that the Sun will slowly become brighter as it ages, eventually transforming into a red giant and engulfing the inner planets. Long before that dramatic finale, however, increasing solar energy is expected to make Earth’s surface unsuitable for most forms of life.

The new study focuses on a key factor often overlooked in simpler models: the relationship between temperature, atmospheric carbon dioxide, and rock weathering. As temperatures rise, weathering processes can remove more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. While this helps regulate climate, it can also reduce CO2 to levels too low for photosynthesis, threatening the foundation of Earth’s food chain.

To explore possible outcomes, the researchers modeled two extreme scenarios. In one, weathering acts as a highly effective planetary thermostat, keeping temperatures stable while carbon dioxide levels steadily decline. In the other, weathering has little effect, allowing temperatures to rise as the Sun brightens.

Under the warmer scenario, most land plants would reach their physiological limits around 1.68 billion years from now, with the remaining species disappearing by roughly 1.87 billion years. In the low-CO2 scenario, declining carbon dioxide would become the primary threat, although some hardy plant species could survive until approximately 1.84 billion years in the future.

The findings suggest Earth’s biosphere may have a longer lifespan than previously thought. While complex plant life will eventually disappear, microbial organisms could persist long afterward. The research may also help scientists better understand how long habitable conditions can last on planets beyond our Solar System.
