Scientists Discover a Simple Water Trick That Could Make Diesel Engines Over 60% Cleaner

A simple modification to conventional diesel fuel could significantly reduce harmful emissions without requiring changes to existing engines, according to a new review of research conducted by scientists in Nigeria. The findings suggest that mixing small amounts of water into diesel fuel may lower pollution while maintaining, and in some cases improving, engine performance.

Researchers from the Federal University of Technology Owerri analyzed studies on Water-in-Diesel Emulsion (WiDE) technology, which disperses microscopic water droplets throughout diesel fuel using special stabilizing compounds called surfactants. The review found that the approach could offer a practical and cost-effective way to reduce emissions from diesel engines used in trucks, farm equipment, generators, and industrial machinery.

Unlike simply mixing water with fuel, WiDE technology creates a stable emulsion that can remain effective for up to 60 days. During combustion, the trapped water rapidly turns to steam, triggering tiny “micro-explosions” that break the fuel into finer droplets. This improves fuel and air mixing, resulting in more complete combustion while lowering peak combustion temperatures.

According to the review, the technology reduced nitrogen oxide emissions by as much as 67 percent and particulate matter emissions by up to 68 percent compared with conventional diesel fuel. Researchers also reported improvements in brake thermal efficiency, meaning engines converted more of the fuel’s energy into useful mechanical power instead of losing it as heat.

Lead author Dr. Chukwuemeka Fortunatus Nnadozie said the technology provides an immediate path toward cleaner diesel engines because it does not require expensive engine redesigns. The researchers identified surfactants as one of the most important components, since they keep water and diesel evenly mixed and ensure the fuel remains stable during storage and use.

While the results are encouraging, the team says further research is needed to optimize surfactant formulations and evaluate the long-term effects on engine components. Rather than replacing other clean fuel technologies, the researchers believe Water-in-Diesel Emulsion could complement existing emissions control systems and help reduce pollution as industries transition toward cleaner energy.
