The OpenAI chief revealed plans for a project designed to manufacture one gigawatt of AI infrastructure every single week, an undertaking he described as “the coolest and most important infrastructure project ever.” According to Business Insider, the initiative ties directly into OpenAI’s massive Stargate program, a $500 billion build-out of data centers in partnership with Oracle and SoftBank.
The first phase is already underway, with a flagship site being built in Abilene, Texas. Reports suggest this site alone will anchor part of a network of facilities totaling nearly seven gigawatts of capacity. Expansions are also being prepared across New Mexico, Ohio, and the Midwest, creating what could become the most extensive AI data hub in the world. Reuters noted that five new sites are part of the Stargate rollout, a sign that OpenAI and its partners are willing to commit staggering resources to make this vision real.
But the scale of the plan is only part of the story. The challenge lies in the electricity. Producing and powering a gigawatt of AI infrastructure weekly would strain regional grids and push energy procurement strategies to the forefront. Altman himself acknowledged that electricity is likely to be the biggest bottleneck, even more than hardware supply or construction. This comes as Nvidia has already pledged $100 billion to secure access to the compute capacity OpenAI requires, underscoring how central infrastructure has become in the AI arms race.
