Only if robots had feelings, they could experience the enthralling event that was RoboCup 2016. Euphoria overtook Leipzig, Germany this year as a staggering total of 3,500 participants from more than 45 countries and regions came to RoboCup 2016 and locked horns for the title of World Champions. With more than 1,200 robots competing in the event and thousands of supporters cheering their teams in the arena, it could not have been bigger than this!
The robot soccer tournament has been running every year since 1997. The international community – both the scientists and students from all over the world – participate in such events in a bid to contribute towards the development of intelligent robots that are can be used to work in realistic scenarios in the near future. At the final of the event, the most sensational of finishes took place as the match went into the penalty shootouts. In the end, the 20th edition of this tournament was won by a team from Iran, but not before breaking into a pool of nervous sweat as the match could have gone either way!
The competitions were also complemented by exciting exhibitions, a scientific technical program to discuss the technical nitty-gritties of the technology and several participation offerings. The enthusiastic support from the participants and the incredible showcase of programming masterpieces during the tournament made it all the more special.
