German automotive supplier Mahle is setting new benchmarks in electric motor technology with its Super Continuous Torque (SCT) motor system. First unveiled in 2022, the SCT motor impressed with its ability to deliver 90% of its peak power continuously. Now, Mahle has taken this innovation further by integrating two SCT motors into an all-electric truck axle with an impressive 92% continuous power output and a near-700-horsepower peak rating. This technological leap could redefine electric mobility across diverse sectors, from heavy-duty trucks to construction equipment.
The SCT motor’s standout feature lies in its integrated oil cooling system, which enables it to maintain high power output without overheating. Unlike conventional motors that require reduced continuous power to avoid damage, the SCT motor’s design allows for sustained operation at near-peak performance. At 92% of its 697-horsepower peak power, the dual-motor setup exemplifies efficiency and durability.
This capability opens up possibilities for electric vehicles to take on demanding tasks previously reserved for traditional internal combustion engines. For instance, Mahle’s dual-SCT electric axle can drive a 35-tonne fuel-cell-electric truck up the challenging Brenner Alpine pass 10% faster than a diesel equivalent, saving 3.5 minutes on the route between Innsbruck and Bolzano.
The SCT motor system isn’t limited to trucks. Its adaptability makes it suitable for agricultural machinery, construction equipment, and even high-performance electric sports cars. Heavy-duty vehicles can operate at full load for extended periods, boosting productivity, while sports cars can deliver multiple bursts of acceleration in rapid succession, offering enhanced performance for highway overtakes or track runs.
At the IAA Transportation 2024 exhibition, Mahle showcased a mockup of a complete fuel-cell drive system built around the SCT technology. The display included a high-definition (HD) electric axle with two SCT motors, a thermal management setup featuring a biomimetic cooling fan, and supporting fuel-cell hardware. This comprehensive design reflects Mahle’s vision for a sustainable, high-performance electric future.
In addition to its advanced cooling technology, the SCT motor system can be manufactured without permanent magnets. By combining SCT technology with its Magnet-free Contactless Transmitter (MCT) innovation, Mahle offers a “perfect motor” solution ready for series production.
With SCT motors capable of delivering unmatched continuous power, Mahle is well-positioned to influence the evolution of electric and fuel-cell vehicles. The company’s innovative approach could accelerate the shift towards sustainable transportation, particularly in industries where electric solutions were once considered impractical.
