OpenAI has introduced GPT-4o, a new chatbot model promising human-like interaction akin to the movie “Her.” During a live-streamed event, OpenAI’s CTO, Mira Murati, announced the rollout of GPT-4o’s Voice Mode to ChatGPT Plus users in the coming weeks. This update aims to enhance user experience, making interactions with the chatbot more intuitive and conversational.
Murati emphasized, “This is the first time we are really making a huge step forward when it comes to the ease of use.”
ChatGPT users that utilise the free version already have access to GPT-4o’s text and image features, while Plus users have access to more significant message limits. Encouraging more people to use its top technologies is in line with OpenAI’s objective of growing its user base, which presently numbers more than 100 million. The announcement’s timing, which comes before Google’s I/O developers’ conference, gives some indication about the AI industry’s competitive environment.
GPT-4o performs on par with GPT-4 Turbo, which was formerly available solely to ChatGPT Plus users, in comparison to GPT-3.5. The unique feature of OpenAI is that it can train a single model to be more capable in several modalities—text, vision, and audio. Murati clarified, “GPT-4o provides GPT-level intelligence, but it is much faster and it improves on its capabilities across text, vision, and audio.”
During the event, live demonstrations of GPT-4o’s amazing features, including latency-free real-time Voice Mode discussions, took place. Vision-based tasks, like math problem-solving, emotion recognition in images, and language translation, were easily executed. Furthermore, thanks to the release of a desktop app, users can screen-share using ChatGPT for help and collaboration.
In a blog post, Sam Altman compared GPT-4o’s voice and video mode to artificial intelligence in movies, hailing it as a ground-breaking interface. The chatbot’s expressiveness and human-level response times mark a major advancement in AI technology, turning user interactions into engaging experiences.
