OpenAI has rolled out its Advanced Voice Mode (AVM) to more ChatGPT users, offering an enhanced, more natural audio interaction experience. Initially available to ChatGPT Plus and Teams subscribers, the feature will reach Enterprise and Edu customers next week. This launch introduces a revamped design, with the AVM icon now represented by a blue animated sphere, replacing the previous black dots.
Users will receive a notification when AVM becomes available in their ChatGPT app. OpenAI’s update includes five new voices—Arbor, Maple, Sol, Spruce, and Vale—bringing the total to nine, alongside existing voices like Breeze, Juniper, Cove, and Ember. These voice names are inspired by nature, aligning with AVM’s goal of creating a more organic user experience. Missing from the new lineup is the “Sky” voice, which was removed earlier this year following a legal dispute with Scarlett Johansson, who claimed it resembled her voice from the film Her.
Though the release doesn’t include features such as video and screen sharing, which OpenAI showcased in the spring, the company is working to improve the voice experience. Enhancements since the alpha version include better accent recognition and smoother conversations. During testing, OpenAI acknowledged occasional glitches, but these are reportedly resolved.
Additionally, ChatGPT’s voice mode now includes customizable features like Custom Instructions, allowing users to personalize ChatGPT’s responses, and Memory, enabling the system to retain and reference past conversations.
However, AVM is not yet available in several regions, including the EU, U.K., and Switzerland. As OpenAI continues to expand its voice capabilities, it aims to refine the technology, making it a central feature in its broader vision for more immersive AI interactions.
