The younger generations are not disappointing us when it comes to the future of this planet that the older generations have devoured and continue to devour. There are initiatives that are springing up all over the world that are aimed at involving younger generations to make a change and to save the planet. Despite the fact that these generations are not the one to blame for its current situation, it would appear that it is these generations that will be saving the planet after all.
On May 15, the Philippine Congress passed a law, thus making it compulsory for students to plant ten trees if they wish to graduate school. According to the bill, this requirement has been imposed on all students who want to graduate from primary school, high school, and college. The bill was put forth by Congressman Gary Alejano.
According to Gary Alejano, the aim of the bill is to promote inter-generational responsibility while also inciting environmental protection. He says, ‘While we recognise the right of the youth to a balanced and healthy ecology… there is no reason why they cannot be made to contribute in order to ensure that this will be an actual reality.’
The initiative by Gary Alejano will help to plant a total of one hundred and seventy-five million trees! As per Alejano, if only 10% of all of the planted trees survive; in the course of one generation, there will be a total of five hundred and twenty-five million trees. That is quite an impressive number and could actually help the planet.
We believe that such initiatives need to be taken and must be taken whole-heartedly and with sheer commitment. Because as it stands, we are on the brink of a climate disaster that we need to avert. Such initiatives are one way to go about it and must be encouraged! What do you think? Do let us know!
