New Robotic Clothing Can Put Itself on You in Just 10 Seconds

South Korean researchers have developed robotic clothing that can automatically wrap itself around the wearer, potentially making it easier for people with limited mobility to get dressed without assistance.

The system, called SWAG, short for Self-Wearing Adaptive Garments, uses inflatable robotic vines embedded inside clothing. As the vines extend, they pull the fabric around the wearer’s body and effectively put the garment on without requiring the person to use their hands.

The technology is based on a type of vine robot developed by Stanford researcher Allison Okamura. Instead of moving forward like a conventional robot, the flexible structure extends by everting from its tip, similar to the way a party horn unfolds. This allows it to navigate complex spaces while adapting to the surrounding shape.

South Korean researcher Kim Nam Gyun saw potential for the technology while riding a bicycle in the rain. He imagined a raincoat that could automatically put itself on while the rider continued moving.

“The vine robot stays close to the person and dresses them by turning the clothing inside out as it moves, allowing it to climb stably along the shape of the body,” Kim explained.

The system works by using air pressure to inflate and extend the robotic vines inside a garment. As they grow along the body, they turn the fabric outward and gradually pull the clothing into position. Depending on the pressure applied, the process can take as little as about 10 seconds.

Researchers have already demonstrated several prototypes using the approach, including sleeves, trousers and full-body garments. The robotic mechanisms remain visible inside the prototypes, but their ability to move fabric around the body could have practical applications beyond convenience.

The technology could be particularly useful for older adults and people with physical conditions that make dressing difficult. Tasks such as pulling on sleeves, putting on pants or fastening clothing can require significant coordination and mobility, making them challenging without assistance.

SWAG also demonstrates how relatively simple mechanical systems can address accessibility problems without relying heavily on artificial intelligence or complex software. Rather than teaching a machine to dress someone, the researchers designed the clothing itself to physically move around the wearer.

If the technology can be made smaller, quieter and more comfortable, self-wearing garments could eventually provide people with limited mobility greater independence in their daily routines.
