NASA’s Perseverance rover has achieved a major milestone on Mars, completing the equivalent of a full marathon by traveling 26.2 miles (42.195 kilometers) across the Red Planet. The accomplishment comes more than five years after the rover landed inside Jezero Crater to search for signs of ancient microbial life and collect rock samples for future return to Earth.
A newly released image captured on June 13, 2026, shows Perseverance as a tiny green speck against the vast Martian landscape, just one day before it officially crossed the marathon-distance mark on the mission’s 1,890th Martian day, or sol. The image and milestone were highlighted by NASA, <a href=”https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2026/07/260713084858.htm“>according to ScienceDaily</a>.
Perseverance completed the journey in five years and four months of driving, significantly outperforming NASA’s previous distance record holder, the Opportunity rover, which took more than 11 years to travel the same distance on Mars.
The overhead image was captured by NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter using its High-Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera. In addition to the rover itself, the image clearly shows the winding tracks Perseverance has carved into the Martian surface during its exploration. At the time, the rover was operating west of Jezero Crater in an area the science team calls “Arbot.”
Perseverance continues to investigate ancient rocks and geological formations that could preserve evidence of past life while collecting samples for NASA’s Mars Sample Return campaign. The rover also carries the Ingenuity helicopter’s legacy forward, building on years of technological achievements that have expanded scientists’ understanding of Mars.
NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California manages both the Perseverance rover and the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter for the agency’s Science Mission Directorate. Lockheed Martin Space built the orbiter, while the University of Arizona operates the HiRISE camera.
