Earlier this year, Mozilla released comparatively cheaper phones in Europe, priced at $99 and now if the rumors that are floating are true; Mozilla has plans to begin a new campaign in the second half of 2014 where it will introduce another batch of smartphones in India and Indonesia priced at $25.
Mozilla has decided to place bets on how it can sell low cost smartphones when it comes to the Firefox OS. The idea is quite simple; produce smartphones that are relatively cheap and float them in the markets where the consumer’s buying power is less. Gong Li, Mozilla’s chief operating officer says; ‘any smartphone priced above $60 is still too expensive for most consumers in India and other Southeast Asian countries.’
Firefox OS smartphones are not being designed to take on other OS smartphones but rather they are being designed to target the audience that is sill untapped and Mozilla is looking forward to unlocking this market.
